Introduction
The purpose of this form is to provide you information that may affect your decision as to whether or not to participate in this research study. If you decide to participate in this study, this form will also be used to record your consent.

You have been asked to participate in this research project studying programs and platforms used for instructional purposes and within instructional settings. The purpose of this study is to gather information about how students access instructional technology such as wikis, PowerPoint, email, Blackboard, etc., as well as what instructional technologies are being utilized in the First Year Writing Program Composition courses. You were selected to be a possible participant because you are enrolled in either ENGL 1301 or 1302 in the Spring, Summer 1, and Summer 2, semesters of 2011.

What will I be asked to do?
If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete a short, anonymous survey online. No personal or identifiable information will be collected. After the survey data has been collected you may be asked to volunteer for participation in a focus group. Focus group volunteers will be asked 5 short questions related to the information on the survey. Again, this process will remain anonymous and no connection between the information gathered and your identity will be collected. This study will take approximately 15 minutes to complete the survey and about the same length of time for the focus group questions (dependent on individual answers.)

What are the risks involved in this study?
The risks associated in this study are minimal, and are not greater than risks ordinarily encountered in daily life.

What are the possible benefits of this study?
Participants will receive no direct benefit from participating in this study; however, the information you provide may inform instruction and/or methods in the First Year Writing Program. Also, participation in a masters' level project may encourage you to participate in or conduct future research.

Do I have to participate?
No. Your participation is voluntary. You may decide not to participate or to withdraw at any time without your current or future relations with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi being affected.

Who will know about my participation in this research study?
This study is anonymous. No identifiers linking you, your class section, or your instructor to your answers will be gathered. The records of this study will be kept private. No identifiers linking you to this study will be included in any sort of report that might be published. Research records will be stored securely and only Mrs. Erica Baumle, Dr. Susan Wolff-Murphy, Dr. Michelle Maresh, and Dr. Susan Garza will have access to the records.
